How to read betting odds

American odds show a price relative to $100:

  • A plus price (+150) is the profit on a $100 stake. $100 at +150 wins $150.
  • A minus price (−110) is the stake needed to win $100. $110 at −110 wins $100.

Decimal odds show the total return per 1 unit staked, stake included. At 2.50, a $10 stake returns $25.

Conversion formulas

  • American to decimal, plus price: 1 + (odds ÷ 100). +150 → 2.500
  • American to decimal, minus price: 1 + (100 ÷ |odds|). −110 → 1.909
  • Decimal to American, 2.00 or more: (decimal − 1) × 100. 2.75 → +175
  • Decimal to American, below 2.00: −100 ÷ (decimal − 1). 1.50 → −200

Implied probability

The implied probability is the break-even win rate a price represents:

  • Plus price: 100 ÷ (odds + 100). +150 → 40.00%
  • Minus price: |odds| ÷ (|odds| + 100). −110 → 52.38%
  • Decimal: 1 ÷ decimal odds. 2.75 → 36.36%, 1.50 → 66.67%

Why both sides add up to more than 100%

When both sides of a game are priced −110, each implies 52.38%, for a total of 104.76%. The extra 4.76% is the sportsbook’s margin, often called the vig or juice. Implied probability is a property of the price. It is not a prediction of what will happen.
